How to Harness the Power of Internet TV to Watch What You Want, When and Where You Want
What Exactly is Internet TV? According to Wikipedia, it wasn’t until the 21st century when Internet television (a.k.a. Internet TV, iTV or Online TV) started to become popular. It started with a few television services like Hulu in the US that began distributing free media content over the Internet.
While most of the content was free and still is today to watch on a computer, it wasn’t’ until the streaming of popular live and on-demand channels such as TV episodes, news, movies and sports that drew a wider audience to Internet television.
The basic concept of Internet television is that it allows the user to select a particular TV show by pointing and clicking to programs from either an archive or channel directory found on a website like Hulu and Fancast or in free media players and paid TV players such as, Satellite TV for PC Elite, Stream Direct and Satellite PC Pro.
Two Basic Ways to View Internet TV Content
- Internet television content can be streamed directly to paid TV player or free media players such as, Quicktime Player, RealPlayer, and WMP (Windows Media Player). These are some of the free popular players that can be downloaded from the Internet mostly to Windows and MAC computers
- Also, Internet television content such as on-demand channels and videos can be downloaded to the end-user’s computer. This method is sometimes preferred when a TV player is embedded in the user’s browser and ‘choppy’ video occurs which often has something to due with the connection speed
The requirements that makes all of this work is a desktop or laptop computer with an Internet connection. Using a 56k modem/dial-up will have no problem playing narrowband channels and radio stations. However, that connection speed isn’t enough to play channels with larger bandwidth.
Using a wireless connection is better but still there are channels with larger bandwidths that won’t play such as some of the sports channels.
It’s generally preferred to use an Internet broadband connection (DSL or High Speed). Higher the connection speed better the video quality and overall performance, which also makes downloading faster. However, for the ultimate performance and quality, it also depends on the end-user’s computer – the quality of the multimedia and video software, as well as computer screen.
The source where channels and videos come from can also play an important factor in the quality of the picture.
Don’t get too caught up on receiving HDTV channels. At best there will be high quality channels (picture/video) with some occasional blurriness and ‘choppiness’, due those factors that were just mentioned. At best, a good TV player will give a good picture quality most of the times when delivering streaming channels and other media to ones computer.
Until Internet television technology improves, home television still offers the best picture quality.
When connecting an online TV computer system to a TV-set at home, sometimes the picture can be of low quality and you can experience some blurriness, but still viewable. Overall, whether watching TV from a computer or connecting it to a TV-set, the picture quality is relatively good and at times HD quality-like.
According to recent reports, the online TV demand and market continues to show grow each and every year. As more popular content is streamed over the Internet, the same can be said for the number of Internet television viewers. And because of this, it has caught the attention of major television networks.
It didn’t take long for them to see just how powerful Internet media had become, especially after seeing how it crippled the music industry and newspaper.
The free live and on-demand Internet television content all comes from online TV networks, licensed media providers and other 3rd party sources with some of them referring to some kind of Government loophole that allows them to pinged channels from one Country into another.
However, while there are a great number of these media websites that exist today and from around the world, there continues to be a war between TV networks and some of the 3rd party online media sites that are showcasing channels and videos without permission.
Again, this points to a Government loophole that somehow keeps most of these websites around including PC Satellite TV services which are growing abundantly. The Internet isn’t regulated by the FCC but that doesn’t mean they are not trying.
Until the FCC and other Governments merge and develop some type of Internet television regulation, many of these 3rd party services will continue to exist which doesn’t matter so as long as they don’t infringe on copyrights, Digital Millennium and Intellectual Property laws.
Internet television is still in its ’baby-stage’ and doesn’t live in a perfect world. Technology is just now beginning to catch up to the streaming and video issues that exist when watching TV and videos online via some device.
With hi-tech multimedia computers, portable and mobile devices capable of connecting online hitting the market by storm, the future of online TV is underway — giving birth to a new generation of television.
